Philosophy

Students never have enough time. With classes, sports practice, rehearsals, internships, and after school jobs, no high school student wants to take on one more boring and time-consuming obligation by adding test prep to his or her already crazy schedule. And the same goes for parents. With the unending succession of deadlines and hoops to jump through, no parent wants one more occasion for argument or one more extracurricular program to monitor.
But the truth is… preparation is king. Few students can compete in today’s college application arms race without doing some kind of test prep. So the question is this: What’s the most effective but least painful way to prepare for the SAT/ACT? After working with students for the last 18 years, I’ve developed a test prep approach with four main functions:
Build students’ confidence:
To build a student’s confidence, you have to minimize the stress and discouragement that accompanies standardized testing. Often students have some subject they just can’t wrap their minds around. At some point in their academic lives, they told themselves that they couldn’t do math or they were bad at writing. Those limitations become identities they carry into every classroom. “Who am I? Oh, I’m a bad test-taker.” This kind of thinking becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, causing a problem instead of identifying one. To address this, I expose their doubts and fears and demonstrate that they are much more capable than they think they are. On the surface, I may be helping them prepare for a “pointless” standardized test, but ultimately, my goal is to revise their understanding of their own limitations and multiply their confidence.
Take the pressure off parents:
The high-stakes college application process can be incredibly stressful for the whole family. The best thing I can do to help is take the burden of motivation and planning off parents. To make this possible, I’ve done something pretty radical: I’ve eliminated homework from my test prep program. This means that there’s no need for parents to step in and ensure the homework’s getting done because I assign none [see: No Homework]. Zero. Nada. Zilch. All work is done in session, so as long as the student arrives with a pencil and a calculator, there is nothing to worry about or budget time for.
Teach the material efficiently:
Both energy and time are finite resources in a student’s life, so it’s crucial that test prep be as efficient as possible. Most conventional tutoring programs use a one-size-fits-all curriculum to teach to the test; this requires hours of homework, and long, intense sessions. While this may seem useful—work as hard as you possibly can and you’ll get big results, right?—it can actually be totally counterproductive. Imagine sitting across from someone for hours at a time, as he or she points out everything you’re doing wrong, question after question. Even an adult would be exhausted and discouraged by that routine. Instead, I draw on my nearly two decade’s worth of experience to provide immediate feedback and targeted instruction that addresses the core issues each student is having. Not only does this surgical approach minimize damage to the student’s morale, but I also deliver that feedback in the most efficient way possible: while the questions are still fresh in the student’s mind. After a student finishes a section of a practice test, he or she meets with me to go over the problems they just struggled with. This increases both comprehension and retention, resulting in bigger score gains with less study time.
Help families navigate the standardized testing season:
“Will my son perform better on the SAT or the ACT?” “Is my daughter ready to take the test yet?” “Which Subject Test is best?” Having worked with over 1500 students, I can guide you through the SAT/ACT testing season, advising on when to take which test in order to maximize performance and avoid the disappointing results common with students who take the test before they’re ready. No more missed deadlines. No more guesswork or partially informed advice. Just experienced strategy from someone whose life has revolved around the standardized testing season for the last 18 years.
Over the course of my career, I’ve worked with just about every kind of student: from the overachiever with test anxiety to the smart kid who never tries; from the math wiz who programs in her spare time to the poet with a 504 plan; from the theater techie to the cross-country anchor; from the diligent scholar to the kid who just can’t be bothered. I’ve refined my approach to test prep, in order to address the underlying issues that affect the full range ability levels and personalities. While this learning process has informed how I teach, the most fundamental lesson I’ve learned over the last 18 years is that I genuinely enjoy working with this age range. I’m not their adversary; I’m their ally. And I think that comes through. [See: Testimonials]

Not Giving Up On School – Why Perseverance Is Important – More About Mr. Test Prep’s Menlo Park ACT SAT test prep tutoring Services

School can be hard. It is so tough to juggle all the demands of studying, preparing for college, taking exams, playing sports, working and other extracurriculars. It is easy to fall behind and become discouraged. It might even be tempting to give up. However, there are a lot of good reasons to keep going. One excellent reason to keep in mind as you struggle to persevere is salary.
The Facts
Salary isn’t everything and there is a lot to be said about doing what you love. However, salary is helpful and having a secure income can help you achieve your goals. The National Center for Educational Statistics found that those who complete high school have a significantly higher salary than those that don’t. The trend continues as those who obtain a bachelor’s degree earn more than those with a high school degree. An advanced degree earns even more. The statistics also show that those with high school and college degrees are more likely to be employed all year than those that have no degree. A bachelor’s degree, on average, earns a 66% higher salary than the average of salary of those with a high school degree.
It may seem superficial to hold on to salary statistics for inspiration, but in your toughest moments it is these concrete facts that may help you persevere and continue with your education. It will be a lot easier to achieve the job of your dreams when you have the skills and training you need to be successful. Some of the most rewarding successes in life come when you persevere through challenges.
Enlist Help
The good news is you don’t have to go it alone. When you are struggling get help. Enlist a team that includes your parents, teachers, counselors and tutors. Admit when you are struggling and use these important people to help you develop a plan for organizing your time and managing your studies. Even just talking to someone about how you feel can relieve some stress. Tell someone you feel like giving up and ask for help.
There are so many lifelong rewards to completing your education. Stick with it even when it feels too hard. You won’t regret it.

3 Ways To Avoid The Plagiarism Trap – Mr. Test Prep’s Los Gatos ACT SAT Test Prep Tutoring Services

Plagiarism is a serious offense, it can cause you to fail an assignment or even a course. Most instructors have very strict consequences for plagiarism and it is easier than ever to identify plagiarism using search tools designed specifically for teachers.
Unfortunately, it can be easy to plagiarize. It is tempting to copy a simple phrase, or even accidentally copy a statement you read while doing your research. Here are a 3 ways to avoid plagiarism.
1) Simple Notes
YourTutor suggests taking very simple notes. Simplify facts, statements and concepts found in other sources down to bullet points. When you go back to do your writing you will have to craft your own sentences using the research, rather than using copied phrases. Be sure to include the sources with your notes, because even when you paraphrase you must site a reference.
2) Cite Immediately
The Harvard Guide for Using Sources recommends citing your sources as your write. You might think it will be a better use of time to write a paraphrase or a fact and go back later to cite the source. However, it is easy to miss something that should have been cited, or cite the wrong source. When you cite sources as you go, you will know exactly where each piece of information comes from.
3) Ask for Help
If you are having trouble determining whether or not you have created a new idea or need to credit someone else for the idea you are using, ask. Use your writing center or make an appointment with your instructor. You will never be penalized for asking for help. You will face consequences if you are unsure and make the wrong decision. When in doubt, ask for help.
It is important to avoid unintentional plagiarism, but there may be times when you feel so overwhelmed that you are tempted to copy and paste a paper, use someone else’s work, or even buy a paper. The Harvard Guide for Using Sources points out that these forms of plagiarism are never a good idea no matter how hopeless your situation feels. It is much better to face the consequences of turning in a paper late or incomplete than risk your academic career on a plagiarized piece of work.
More About Mr. Test Prep’s Los Gatos ACT SAT test prep tutoring Services
Michael Romano has been offering his Los Gatos SAT prep services for almost two decades. He’s seen thousands of kids and helped with just about every kind of standardized testing anxiety a student could have. This has taught him that increased scores come down to confidence. Yes, you have to understand the material, but confidence is—more often than not—the #1 cause of a student’s trouble with testing. Bearing that in mind, he has created an SAT tutoring program that builds confidence by desensitizing his students to the conditions of the test, while providing them with targeted instruction on both the academic content of the exam and the tips and tricks that make it so much easier.

Quick Mind Exercises To Keep Your Studying On Track – Santa Clara ACT SAT test prep tutoring

You may find your mind wandering when you are trying to concentrate on your studies. When you can’t pay attention to the material, you are wasting time. You will not be learning or retaining the information. Instead of pushing forward, take a break and do one of these quick mind exercises. These exercises will help develop concentration and recenter your focus on the material.
Word Repetition
Success Consciousness suggests choosing an inspiring word or phrase to focus on for a few minutes. Close your eyes and repeat the phrase over and over, focusing on the phrase for five minutes.
Breathe
Focus on your breath. Take deep breaths into the bottom of your belly. Try to focus only on your breathing for a few minutes. Set a timer for five minutes and breathe deeply. Breathing will improve your concentration and blood flow to your brain, which will improve your focus as you study.
Take a Walk
While it may not seem that walking is doing anything to improve your mind, studies show that short bursts of exercise can immediately boost your concentration. In addition to helping your focus, exercise can also improve your mood, which can make your studies more enjoyable.
Stretch
It is a common tendency to tense up as you study. Sitting in a slightly uncomfortable chair will prevent you from feeling too cozy and drifting off. However, aches and pains that can arise from sitting too long will also be distracting. Take intermittent breaks to practice a few yoga poses. Stretching can eliminate tension that comes with stress and improve blood flow to the brain. When you are feeling loose and relaxed you will be able to concentrate.
Visualization
Take time to visualize the exam you are preparing for. Imagine the room, what the other people will look like, how the test will look, and sounds you might here. Take time to imagine yourself feeling calm and in control. You can even visualize the grade you receive on your exam. This exercise will help you focus and it will help relieve anxiety about the exam. Many athletes depend on visualization for success in their event, the same approach can work for academics.
Use Your Time Wisely
These quick exercises can be done in a short five or ten minute break. Use your breaks wisely to improve your focus, concentration and ultimately your scores.

PSAT|ACT|SAT scholar San Jose California
Duke Graduate • 18 Years Experience • Over 1500 Students
DOES YOUR CHILD NEED TO IMPROVE HIS OR HER STANDARDIZED SAT TEST SCORES?
ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A MASTER SAT TEST TUTOR IN THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA BAY AREA WHO REQUIRES NO HOMEWORK AND GUARANTEES RESULTS?
I can help. Working with high school students for over 18 years, I have developed a philosophy supported by skills and techniques proven to result in superb SAT Tutoring and ACT test results.
We all move through the world with a self-image that sets what we believe we are capable of. This self-image often under serves our potential because it has been formed by a hodge podge of experiences, some encouraging and affirming, others anything but. The sense of self is malleable particularly in young people.
I work to expose their doubts and fears as more imagined than real and to convince them that they are much more capable than they realize. This serves the all-important self-image in a very powerful way. It not only results in vastly improved standardized scores but also recalibrates the belief in what’s possible.
As I work with my students, I never lose sight of my real objective. I may be helping them ace their standardized tests, but ultimately I am elevating more than just a score.

My program is not a traditional “one on one” tutoring situation. I have learned from my almost two decades of experience that there is a better and less painful way to prepare kids for these tests. Over the course of each 2-hour session, students meet with me for three private, one-on-one conferences (totaling about 20 minutes per student, each session),
The value of each 2 hour session is multi faceted:
Investments of time and money vary from student to student. Regardless of ability, students that complete the number of sessions we agree to upfront have a great chance of meeting or surpassing their test prep objectives.
TESTIMONIALS

I had gone to over three different standardized testing tutors in the Bay Area since my freshman year. All left me unsatisfied, with mediocre results and my mother constantly reprimanding me for spending so much money on multiple exams and different tutors. On a whim, we tried Mr. Test Prep. Many of my friends had gone to him and raved about how his tutoring style is unique, effective, and definitely worth the money. They all succeeded in their standardized test preps, why shouldn’t I?
I can clearly remember Mr. Test Prep’s response when I said, “I’m no good at math and science.” He said, “Don’t think that way! These questions are easy if you think of them as easy. Let me break ‘em down for you…” Ever since then, the ACT has not intimidated me with the daunting math and science sections. His tricks to make sure I didn’t make any “silly” mistakes even increased my scores to near-perfection in the subjects that I was stronger in – reading, writing, and English! Additionally, the group testing environment was insanely helpful in practicing what to expect during test day. Mr. Test Prep’s unpredictable outbursts of songs and people’s sneezing and coughing inevitably allowed me to block out the irrelevant and focus on the test. I also still do his meditations today before a big event or test! They have assisted me greatly in becoming more centered, and have me diving into any task headfirst with steady hands and tranquility.
Not only did Mr. Test Prep increase my confidence in test taking, but he also helped boost my overall determination in conquering whatever may stand in my way – including math and science! The results of Mr. Test Prep’s tutoring are not merely numbers. If you are seeking someone who is more than a tutor – someone who is a role model, friend, and a hilarious mentor, then Mr. Test Prep is for you!

Michael is by far the best mentor I have ever had. With his help, I was able to raise my SAT score by 240 points, which ultimately allowed me to get into several of my dream schools, including Dartmouth and Brown. He doesn’t merely teach the right answers, rather he provides his students with the mental tools and strategies necessary to think critically. One of the most important tools he focuses on is confidence. Through genuine, personable mentorship and support, Michael elevates not only test scores but also self-esteem that will benefit your child beyond his or her college process. His tutoring style can best be described as process of elimination: constant practice with past SAT tests eliminates the fear of unfamiliarity of the test; one-on-one guidance eliminates the pressure to move at a pace other than your own; his smile and sense of humor eliminates the fear of making mistakes…and all that’s left is your child’s fullest potential. Michael saw something in me, from our first session together, and cultivated that spark and turned it into something great. I have gained so much more than just points on my SAT score from working with Michael and it is an opportunity that I am grateful for every day. I highly recommend Michael as a tutor whether it’s for SAT, SAT II, ACT or anything!

I would not be at the University of Michigan without Michael Romano. Plain and simple.
When I was in high school, I had about a 3.3 GPA. I was below the threshold for a lot of schools’ GPA standards, especially Michigan’s. The only hope I had of finding my way to a big time school like Michigan was to seriously differentiate myself on my standardized tests. Unfortunately, those weren’t going great either (I was scoring high, but not in the 99th percentile like I’d need to in order to overcome my GPA).
I took a Princeton Review SAT course before coming to Mr. Test Prep. I thought it made sense to try a cheaper option first, I could not have been more wrong. Princeton Review didn’t treat me like a person. I don’t think the instructor ever even knew my name. What was even worse was that my score didn’t go up one point. They used umbrella teaching techniques that tried to address the needs of an entire class at once. I don’t think it helped anyone very much.
I went to Michael for a free practice test and consultation. He looked over the mistakes I’d made on the practice, congratulated me on already being a high scorer, and then told me he could get me where I needed to be. 2200 or higher.
Well, I’m at Michigan now, and I can tell you that my GPA did not improve my senior year of high school. It was Michael’s tutoring that got me into the school of my dreams. It’s that simple. I’ve been accepted into one of the most prestigious writing programs in the country, and started my own game company, and none of that would be possible without the hours Michael spent on me, personally, one-on-one, making every painstaking point on every last practice SAT the most importing part of his life at that time.
Near the end of my third year at the University of Michigan, I got a message from Mr. Test Prep asking how I’d been (that’s right, Michael cares enough about his students that he checked in three years after I took the SAT and ACT). He was interested in my life at Michigan, the projects I’d been a part of, and the progress of my writing career. He cared about getting me here, and he cares about where I go from here, and I only know him because he was my SAT tutor.
The least I can do after receiving that kind of genuine support from Michael is share my story with you all. Mr. Test Prep can make a difference on your test scores, I think every review on this page is a testament to that, but what I want to make abundantly clear is that Mr. Test Prep can make a difference in your life, which goes far beyond the investment of time and money spent on his tutoring sessions.
